Three Centuries Rewrite T20 History as Washington Freedom Complete Record-Breaking Chase Against MI New York
Washington Freedom created T20 cricket history by completing the highest successful chase after three batters scored centuries in the same men's T20 match. MI New York's Nicholas Pooran, Andries Gous and Steven Smith produced record-breaking performances during MLC 2026 Eliminator 1 at Oakland Coliseum.
MI New York's Nicholas Pooran, Washington Freedom's Andries Gous and Steven Smith produced extraordinary batting performances as the game shattered multiple T20 records. Pooran smashed a 31-ball century, becoming the fastest centurion in Major League Cricket history, while Gous and Smith responded with 40-ball hundreds each during Freedom's historic chase of 267 runs.
With the victory, Washington Freedom secured a place in Eliminator 2, where they will face San Francisco Unicorns. The winner of that contest will meet LA Knight Riders in the MLC 2026 final.
For much of the match, MI New York appeared to be in complete control after Pooran and Kieron Pollard dominated the Freedom bowling attack. Pollard reached the milestone of 1,000 sixes in T20 cricket during his explosive 25-ball 64-run innings, while Pooran launched a powerful assault that placed MI New York in a commanding position.
The momentum shifted after Rachin Ravindra delivered a crucial bowling performance. Introduced when MI New York were 211 for 3 after 13 overs, Ravindra claimed four wickets for 28 runs despite bowling only the 14th, 16th, 18th and 20th overs. His disciplined spell restricted MI New York's scoring rate, preventing them from achieving an even larger total as they finished with 266 for 9.
Washington Freedom faced early trouble during the chase when Shakib Al Hasan struck twice with the new ball in his opening two overs, reducing the team to 10 for 2. However, Andries Gous and Steven Smith completely changed the course of the match with a remarkable third-wicket partnership.
The pair matched each other with aggressive stroke play and added 241 runs for the third wicket in only 89 balls, becoming part of the joint second-highest partnership for any wicket in men's T20 cricket. Both batters reached their centuries in 40 balls, powering Washington Freedom towards the record target.
Freedom eventually completed the chase of 267 runs, surpassing Punjab Kings' successful chase of 265 against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League earlier this year to establish the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket history.
The historic encounter also marked the first men's T20 match featuring three individual centuries. Gous and Smith's hundreds during the chase became only the second instance of two batters scoring centuries while pursuing a target in a T20 match. Pooran and Smith also became only the fourth pair of captains to score centuries in the same men's T20 match.
The record-breaking contest between Washington Freedom and MI New York will be remembered as one of the most remarkable matches in T20 cricket history, with extraordinary batting displays, historic milestones and a record chase defining an unforgettable night at the Oakland Coliseum.
